Cruising Alaska's Inside Passage on National Geographic Venture

national geographic alaska cruise

My room was one of the few cabins on the bottom deck, near the lounge and dining hall. It had two twin-sized beds, a bathroom with a toilet and stand-up shower, and a sink just outside the bathroom. The National Geographic Quest is the perfect ship to explore from the northern reaches of Alaska’s Inside Passage. Built by Nichols Brothers Boat Builders, the National Geographic Quest is the first expedition ship of its kind to be made entirely in the U.S.

Ships

But if money were no object, I wouldn't hesitate to take another Lindblad Expeditions - National Geographic cruise to explore a new destination, like Portugal or Iceland. While seeing the glaciers felt magical, I was also left with a sense of sadness knowing that I might never see these ice structures in the same way, as glaciers are rapidly receding as a result of climate change. The Dawes glacier, which we visited on the Zodiacs, has retreated 3.8 kilometers since 1985, at a rate of 105 meters per year, according to the American Geophysical Union. The Mendenhall Glacier, which we visited in Juneau, has receded 800 feet just between 2021 and 2022, according to Juneau's KTOO News.

Overnight River Boat Cruising In Canada On A Classic Small Ship — The Canadian Empress

Although I haven't been on other cruise ships to compare, I enjoyed the small-ship atmosphere of this cruise. I appreciated that the limited number of passengers allowed everyone to spend time with the naturalists and experts, and made the excursions feel more personal and inclusive. Between the animal sightings, group excursions, and educational sessions, the trip gave me a greater appreciation for Alaska's wildlife and landscape, plus a renewed enthusiasm for nature photography. The cruise was on the National Geographic Sea Bird, a small ship with 31 cabins.

Focus on Photography

One of my favorite on-shore trips was when we docked in Haines, Alaska, and had the choice of an airplane ride, cycling, rafting, or a tundra trek. These smaller rafts allowed us to see animals like bears, whales, and otters up close. On our first Zodiac excursion, I watched a brown bear and two cubs cross over a small waterfall while plucking salmon from the water, less than 20 yards from our boat. I was also eager to learn from the resident researchers and scientists on the ship who are known as naturalists, and who would guide and educate us throughout the trip. The Within the Wild luxury Alaska adventure brings travelers into the Alaskan backcountry without sacrificing comfort. Enjoy remarkable helicopter- and floatplane-assisted adventures, hiking, sportfishing and a wellness program with massage and yoga.

Led by our Expedition Team of naturalists and experts, learn all about the nature and wildlife we encounter. Learn about the living indigenous culture of the region from the Kwakwaka'wakw people; explore the charming provincial capital of Victoria; and sail the waters where orcas gather to hunt in Johnstone Strait. In terms of other Alaska cruises, there are more frugal ways to plan a trip, and you can find cheaper rates on routes in the Sitka region with carriers like Carnival, as of May 2023. However, if you're willing to splurge, I think the wildlife excursions, nature experiences, and connection with naturalists and National Geographic experts are worth the price. There were four naturalists on my cruise, with specialties ranging from geology to undersea studies, as well as one National Geographic photographer.

National Geographic Venture Deck Plan

Visit the Totem Heritage Center to view a unique collection of 19th-century Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian totem poles from abandoned villages around Ketchikan before embarking the ship. Arrive in Juneau, Alaska’s capital city, in the early afternoon and embark the ship in time for cocktails and an introduction of the vessel staff and crew. (Cabin doors can be locked from the inside, but guests do not receive room keys.) A bit unsure about the policy when embarking, I was a quick convert, and enjoyed not having to worry about carrying or losing a key. Still a good 9 miles from Dawes Glacier, the massive chunks of ice strewn across Endicott Arm made it clear the National Geographic Venture could not go any further. This was the first Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic ship to sail into Alaska for the 2023 season, and Venture’s knowledgeable crew — rich with scientists and naturalists — were undaunted by Mother Nature’s roadblock. We walked through old-growth forests dwarfed by stately trees and met locals in places like Victoria, Alert Bay, Petersburg, and Sitka.

Atlas Ocean Voyages ANTARCTICA Review Of World Traveller By Reader Sheryl Rowling From USA — Not A Happy Camper

national geographic alaska cruise

I followed my advice, knowing we had very few ports of call and that catching up to National Geographic Venture would be near impossible. No matter how often I have explored the Last Frontier, I am ready to return. What could be more interesting than exploring the Inside Passage of Alaska and British Columbia with Lindblad Expeditions? Lindblad partners with National Geographic to immerse guests in this wondrous area. Back on the ship, the National Geographic photographer helped select my best pictures and gave me advice to improve my shooting. He also suggested cropping some of my photos to eliminate a distracting background and draw a viewer's eyes to the subject more easily.

With a shallow draft and small size, she can easily reach places inaccessible to larger ships. National Geographic Sea Bird accommodates just 62 guests in 31 outside cabins. Having sailed on other expeditions cruises sans apologies, I knew what to expect. I found the experts extremely knowledgeable and trustworthy while at the same time entertaining.

The ability to be flexible makes this type of small ship cruising unique. Gratuities for all departures of National Geographic Explorer, Orion, Endurance, Resolution, Sea Cloud, Jahan and Lord of the Glens. More than simply recreational travel, Lindblad is known for its emphasis on natural history. Topics of onboard presentations ranged from the impact of climate change on Alaska to insight into whale behaviors and wildlife photography tips. Zodiacs dropped into the frigid water and Venture’s 61 guests were invited to spend the morning navigating the dramatic landscape. Any disappointment from not being able to reach the face of the glacier quickly evaporated, thanks to what naturalists described as an unheard of parade of “charismatic megafauna,” or wildlife.

Our partners at Travelex Insurance offer a variety of plans and policies to fit every trip and budget. Coverage for a pre-existing medical condition is also available if you purchase the Travel Select plan within 15 days of the initial trip payment; refer to plan details. Travelers under the age of 18 at time of travel save $500, at double occupancy.

While I had fun on every experience, including the trek, most of the excursions felt leisurely and left me wanting a more of a thrill. Although I can't compare my cabin with others as this was my first cruise, the room felt small to me since there wasn't much floor space. Still, I thought it was comfortable, and as a solo traveler, I was glad to have the entire room to myself.

We ventured into inlets, searched for sea life, and hoped for calving glaciers. We saw bears, moose, whales, sea lions, porpoises, puffins, and a variety of birds. Breakfast came as a buffet with a special dish usually offered each morning. New small ship cruises, adventure trips, ships & the best deals at your fingertips. This 14-day itinerary between Seattle, Washington, and Sitka, Alaska, is an educational voyage aboard 100-guest sister ships National Geographic Quest or Venture.

From expedition leaders to naturalists, most hold advanced degrees and are established authorities in their fields. Some join a few expeditions each year to explore the same sites, some of them spending some time in the field away from rigorous academic work. And others lead expeditions all around the world—with many guests saying, “Where you’re going, we’re going,” and returning time after time to travel with them. Browse our team directory to discover the full cast of expedition staff. Enjoy active exploration amid a dramatic scenery of mountains, fjords, rivers and glaciers along the Inside Passage of Alaska and British Columbia.

Following the recaps, the passengers and crew spent time in the lounge getting to know each other and chatting about our days. I appreciated these recaps as a refresher on the day, and as a nice chance to bond with my fellow shipmates. After dinner each day, everyone on board gathered in the common lounge for drinks and dessert. As an amateur photographer, I was especially looking forward to having the professional National Geographic photographer onboard, who would lead guided photo walks to share tips for photographing wildlife.

Spend 3-4 nights at a remote backcountry lodge situated 90 miles inside Denali National Park. Unbeatable wildlife viewing, landscape photography, guided hikes, fishing, dog sleds and an Alaska railroad ride can be customized to complement any Alaska small ship cruise. Compare and contrast the various Lindblad Alaska cruises and ships from an expert who's been aboard. Learn what stands out about Lindblad's Alaska programming, guides and crew.

I have traveled between all continents by sea and cruised along three dozen rivers. My journeys have translated into many books and many hundreds of articles. Our knowledgeable and passionate expedition team is complemented by our dedicated hotel team who strives to ensure that your time on board is as comfortable and rewarding as your time on shore. A typical conversation starter asked how many Lindblad cruises we had been on.

MSC Seascape Cruise Ship & Deck Plan

msc cruise line ships

In both cases, the allure of the cruises has more to do with the ports the ships visit than the onboard experience. If you can't live without those sorts of features on a cruise ship, the Musica Class probably isn't for you. You'll also find two pool areas on each of the ships, whirlpools, a miniature golf course and a sports court. Each of the ships also has a theater, spa, casino and multiple bars and lounges. All five of the vessels are built around a grand interior promenade that's home to restaurants, bars and shops. The promenade is covered in an innovative "digital sky" made with LED screens.

The MSC Cruises fleet

msc cruise line ships

In general, the newest MSC Cruises ships are far bigger and much more amenity-packed than its older ships. If you crave a lot of activities in an MSC Cruises cruise vacation, you'll want to stick to vessels built in the last decade or so. One of three main restaurants serving fine-dining specialties in stylish surroundings. MSC Seashore now sailing from Miami to the Bahamas & Caribbean, including full-day calls to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, our award-winning exclusive private island. These are vessels that can carry as many as 6,334 passengers when every berth is filled.

Kaito Sushi Bar

MSC Seashore is the perfect location for the sculpture, bringing its message of care for the sea to thousands of voyagers as the ship sails immersed every day in the wonders of the world’s oceans and seas, their rich and infinitely varied splendour. MSC Seashore is equipped become the first cruise ship in the world to feature a new air sanitation system, ‘Safe Air’, which uses UV-C lamp technology to eliminate viruses and bacteria to guarantee clean and safe air for guests and crew. Explore South America, the magic of the Emirates and North America, the mysteries of the Nordics and Greenland, the exotic Caribbean and the private island Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, our cruises to Asia, South Africa, and our exclusive destination. With many exciting and tailored excursions to enjoy, there is no end of opportunity to be curious and adventurous with MSC Cruises.

Entertainment and activities

This is the first time in the 14-year history of the record-breaking Oasis Class series that a vessel has come close to the Royal Caribbean ships in passenger capacity or size. MSC World Europa offers a major new option for cruisers who love being on the biggest, most amenity-packed vessels. Indeed, four MSC Cruises ships are less than a third the size of its biggest ship (the recently unveiled MSC World Europa) and rank among the smallest of cruise ships operated by the major mass-market lines. That means you have a lot of choices when it comes to picking the perfect MSC Cruises ship for you. On Deck 18, the main pool  has two different depths so that guests can choose to swim or simply stand and hang-out in the water, the newly designed area includes a 360-degree water fountain island in the centre as well as a new lounge space within the pool.

The traditional American-style steakhouse, Butcher’s Cut, celebrates the skill of a master butcher. Serving specialty cuts of meats including dry-aged tomahawk, t-bone, as well as surf and turf, this is a true steak-lovers dream, cooked in an open kitchen, giving onto a relaxed and sophisticated restaurant, inspired by the Golden Age of America. Once on board an MSC Cruises ship, you'll pay extra for most drinks, extra-charge restaurants, spa services, shore excursions, internet and a few other amenities — unless you've paid up for a more inclusive package. It's not uncommon to find MSC Cruises voyages to the Caribbean and the Bahamas from under $75 per person, per night, including all taxes and fees — at least in the offseason. You can also earn points with onboard spending and any bookings you made before embarkation.

What new MSC Cruises ships are coming?

Like other megaship lines, MSC Cruises is known for big, glitzy theater productions performed in onboard theaters that are as state-of-the-art as anything you'll find on Broadway. Several of the line's newest vessels, including MSC Grandiosa and MSC Bellissima, also have the French cuisine-serving L'Atelier Bistrot. In a typical summer, the line will deploy the vast majority of its ships in the Mediterranean or northern Europe. In recent years, the line has also kept at least a couple of ships in Florida in summer for voyages to the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

Enjoy an all-new entertainment concept blending breathtaking acrobatics, dance and live music to create exclusive original productions specially designed for MSC Meraviglia Class ships. It offers avant-garde artistic and immersive performances combined with the innovative technology in a surprising mix of new expressions and experimentation that will make you feel part of the show. While a few of MSC Cruises' smallest ships have relatively limited dining venues, many of the line's vessels offer a wide range of choices. The line's ships are designed to offer something for everyone, and they thus appeal to a wide demographic, including couples of all ages and even solo travelers (the line has added solo cabins on its newer ships and occasionally runs promotions for solo travelers). • Our ships offer the possibility of combining 2 or 3 connecting cabins based on the ship class. They also draw cruisers who care more about the destinations they visit on a cruise than onboard attractions.

This year, the line had two ships based in Florida for summer sailings to the Caribbean and the Bahamas, plus one ship sailing out of New York City for the summer. The newest MSC Cruises ships are particularly known for being bustling, activity-packed ships. Other relatively new MSC Cruises ships include MSC World Europa, MSC Seascape, MSC Seashore and MSC Virtuoso. Although it's barely a couple of months old, it'll soon be supplanted as the newest MSC Cruises vessel by another new MSC Cruises ship, MSC World America, which is scheduled to begin sailing in April 2025.

At 92,409 to 95,128 tons, the four vessels in the series are barely half the size of MSC Cruises' massive Meraviglia Class ships but still big enough that they have a lot to offer. In addition, each of the vessels has a large spa, casino, disco, outdoor cinema and multiple showrooms, lounges and bars. Nineteen decks high and 1,036 feet long, the first two ships in the Meraviglia Class — MSC Meraviglia and MSC Bellissima — are chock full of 30 bars, lounges, eateries and snack outlets (so many there's little chance you'll get to them all on a single sailing). MSC Seashore and MSC Seascape are slightly bigger versions of the first two ships in the series that are part of a subclass called Seaside EVO (EVO stands for "evolution").

Broadcasting live throughout the ship, our TV Studio and radio suite air live games, quizzes, talent contests and other fun content. An excellent selection of cocktails, beer, wine and soft drinks are available to get you ready for your big performance. The image is representative only; the size, layout and furniture may vary (within the same stateroom category). Whether you’re looking for a duplex suite with private whirlpool, an ocean view stateroom or stateroom for families, you’ll find it all on MSC Virtuosa. You'll be sharing your vacation with hordes of other people, of course — as many as 6,000 on some MSC Cruises vessels.

In addition, take in MSC Seashore’s extensive art collection, which you’ll find located throughout the ship from landings and corridors to dedicated galleries. MSC Seashore features new staterooms designed to suit all your needs during your cruise vacation. Choose among 11 different types of staterooms and suites with balconies including the coveted aft suits, 50 terraced suites with extended balconies, and 32 different suites with outdoor private whirlpools. And get to know an unparalleled accommodation experience at the two new palatial Owner’s Suites at the largest and most luxurious MSC Yacht Club.

That makes them particularly appealing to families, including multigenerational groups. MSC Cruises is increasingly known for having big, bustling megaships that'll appeal to people who like a megaresort experience. In other words, if you're the kind of person who loves staying on property at Disney World or at a giant Las Vegas resort, this could be the line for you. MSC Cruises sails almost everywhere in the world, but its heaviest presence is in Europe, where it's the biggest cruise operator.

They're expansive and immersive escapes into playful worlds, not unlike a great cruise. I love tacking on an extra day or two at an Orlando theme park, usually before my cruise departs. I always appreciate the days of racking up thousands of steps traversing a theme park before boarding a cruise, where I know I'll be able to lounge on a deck or relax in a hot tub.

So, if your suitcase is heavy, don’t try to struggle with it. Elevators are usually jam packed on debarkation day but it can be a hassle to carry a suitcase downstairs to the designated meeting place. Professional photographers also will offer plenty of other photography opportunities on the cruise. Those photos are usually posted in a gallery and you can choose whether to buy. Photo prices are not too high and my favorite photo of my grandson was taken on a Disney cruise when he wore his suit to the Captain’s Dinner. Concordia-class cruise ship Wikipedia

concordia cruise

The Costa Concordia, a haven of lavishness with sumptuous offerings, including four swimming pools, a casino, and a colossal spa, set the gold standard for luxury cruising. The seven-day Mediterranean sojourns quickly became iconic, treating guests to the enchanting shores of Italy, France, and Spain. As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, a lot of cruise lines have implemented a virtual muster drill process that allows passengers to watch the safety briefings from their smartphones or stateroom television before visiting their muster station in person. Following the incident, an investigation was opened that focused on the faults in the procedures taken by the crew and Captain Schettino, especially after leaving the ship while passengers were still stranded.

More than 60 people drown after a migrant vessel capsizes off Libya, U.N. says

For Concordia survivors, the COVID-19 infections on cruise ships are just another indication that passenger safety still isn’t a top industry priority. Concordia passengers were largely left on their own to find life jackets and a functioning lifeboat. Because of the delayed evacuation order, many lifeboats couldn’t be lowered because the ship was already on its side.

Vessels of the class

After the Concordia ship sank, intensive efforts were necessary to secure the area and prevent further harm to the fragile marine ecosystem. Captain Schettino, often referred to as Captain Costa Concordia, has been pivotal in the narrative, facing widespread vilification for decisions that led to the shipwreck. The gravity of the captain’s choices that fateful night is anchored deeply in the consciousness of the maritime industry and those affected by the disaster. As I stand here today, the once majestic beacon of the cruise industry lies dormant. The Italian cruise ship crash changed the physical landscape and the lives of all involved.

'We all suffer from PTSD': 10 years after the Costa Concordia cruise disaster, memories remain

The night of this tragic event happened in real time for me as the news broke here in the United States. I was working and publishing news items to our forums and the home page of Cruise Addicts. Sadly, this incredibly poor narrative is not fiction but a real-life catastrophe constructed by a myriad of poor choices. We look back at the life and career of the longtime host of "Sunday Morning," and "one of the most enduring and most endearing" people in broadcasting. A report from the United Nations determined that 1 million species are threatened with extinction.

Investigation and trial

Perhaps the most complex and expensive maritime salvage operation ever attempted saw the 114,500-ton ship pulled upright by a series of huge jacks and cables and set on artificial platforms drilled into the rocky sea bed. The luxury cruise ship Costa Concordia was owned by Costa Cruises, an Italian cruise line company. This ship sank in 2012, but the echoes of the Costa Concordia tragedy still resonate powerfully. Beginning in February 2012, it became a requirement for all cruise ships to complete the drill while still docked in the embarkation port. While Captain Schettino made his way ashore, Mario Pellegrini, the deputy mayor of the Tuscan island of Gigilo where passengers were taken to, boarded the ship to assist with rescue efforts.

The crew and passengers faced a night of uncertainty, forced to abandon the comforts of their cabins for lifeboats and, in some instances, into the open sea. As the evacuation unfolded, the stark contrast between the sinking of the Costa Concordia and the luxury it stood for before the accident couldn’t have been more pronounced. On January 13, 2012, passengers boarded the Concordia, anticipating the exciting journey ahead. Unbeknownst to them, this trip would end drastically different than they had imagined. The first sign of trouble came when the cruise ship initiated a “salute” maneuver near Giglio Island, deviating from its original course.

Wrecking Near the Shore

In 2012, Costa Concordia, a cruise ship owned by Costa Cruises, capsized off of the coast of Italy shortly after departing from Civitavecchia. While not as deadly as the infamous sinking of the Titanic in 1912, this incident resulted in some modifications to the safety guidelines within the cruise industry. Giglio’s vice mayor at the time, Mario Pellegrini, had climbed on board the listing ship that night to help coordinate the rescue, and found sheer chaos in the absence of orders from the captain or crew.

Following the removal of the fuel in March 2012, plans were set in place to arrange for the ship to be scrapped, and for two-and-a-half years, Costa Concordia remained off the coast of Italy. In September 2013, a parbuckling procedure brought the ship to an upright position. In a separate trial, five other Costa Cruises employees were convicted on manslaughter and all entered plea bargains to receive sentences of three years or less.

concordia cruise

In July 2014 the Concordia—outfitted with a number of steel containers serving as flotation devices—was towed to Genoa, Italy, where it was dismantled for scrap. The total cost of the disaster, including victims' compensation, refloating, towing and scrapping costs, is estimated at $2 billion, more than three times the ship's $612 million construction cost. Costa Cruises offered compensation to passengers (to a limit of €11,000 per person) to pay for all damages, including the value of the cruise; one third of the survivors took the offer. The Costa Concordia began taking on water after it struck a reef, leading to a chaotic evacuation process to save the lives of passengers and crew members. As an observer and reporter, I’ve seen firsthand how a once vibrant vacation remnant is now a silent watchdog, ensuring the sanctuary’s safety.

Today, the Costa Concordia cruise ship bears a tale of caution, a lesson submerged in the depths of nautical annals. Before the concordia shipwreck turned the vessel into a byword for disaster, let me guide you through its glory days—the triumph of engineering and luxury it once represented. The anniversary comes as the cruise ship industry, shut down in much of the world for months because of the coronavirus pandemic, is again in the spotlight because of COVID-19 outbreaks that threaten passenger safety. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control last month warned people to avoid cruises, regardless of their vaccination status, because of the infection risk. Prosecutors blamed the delayed evacuation order and conflicting instructions given by crew for the chaos that ensued as passengers scrambled to get off the ship.

Approximately 300 souls remained onboard as the last crew detached, spurring a flurry of survival strategies, including climbing down ladders in a landscape where decks had transformed into walls. In my carnal pursuit of sharing this catastrophe’s account, I am reminded of how closely we skirt the edges between safety and danger and the immeasurable responsibility of those commanding such grand vessels. The sinking of the Costa Concordia, a spectacle of disbelief and sorrow, is a stark reminder of the fleeting nature of security in the face of human error and natural forces. The Costa Concordia was a testament to the prowess of its owner, Costa Crociere, a subsidiary of the world-renowned Carnival Corporation & PLC. Officially launched in 2005, this floating behemoth overtook the historic Titanic in size, spanning an impressive 951 feet. With an opulent passenger capacity of 3,780, it heralded a new era of maritime luxury.

These revisions were not mere suggestions but mandatory steps to solidify trust in cruise vacations for passengers and crew members alike. After the ship hit the reef, the engine room flooded and generators failed, causing a power outage that sent the ship adrift until it eventually crashed offshore and capsized. Evidence presented at the trial showed Schettino downplayed the severity of the situation in communications with the Coast Guard and delayed an evacuation order, then abandoned ship before all the passengers and crew were off. The hospitality of the tight-knit community of islanders kicked in, at first to give basic assistance to the 4,229 passengers and crew members who had to be evacuated from a listing vessel as high as a skyscraper. In no time, Giglio residents hosted thousands of journalists, law enforcement officers and rescue experts who descended on the port. In the months to come, salvage teams set up camp in the picturesque harbor to work on safely removing the ship, an operation that took more than two years to complete.

Whether or not Captain Francesco Schettino was trying to impress his girlfriend is debatable. The wreck was not the fault of unexpected weather or ship malfunction—it was a disaster caused entirely by a series of human errors. When the Costa Concordia succumbed to the sea, it represented a Concordia cruise disaster and raised immediate environmental concerns the Costa Concordia area had to contend with. The marine sanctuary, which could have suffered irreversible damage due to the cruise liner sinking in 2012, desperately needed protective measures. The salvage operations Concordia undertook were a race against time to minimize the ecological footprint of the wreckage.

The events unfolded on the night of January 2012, leaving an indelible mark on history as the cruise ship Costa Concordia sank in Italy. Muster drills are meant to familiarize all passengers with their assigned assembly stations and other cruise ship protocols. The drill is mandatory for all passengers, even those who have cruised before, as the assigned location is dependent on your stateroom and, therefore, will most likely be different on every cruise. The following days were spent searching for other survivors; however, they were halted at one point due to fearing the ship would sunk further, thus risking the lives of divers. The final mad scramble to evacuate the listing liner and then the extraordinary generosity of Giglio islanders who offered shoes, sweatshirts and shelter until the sun rose and passengers were ferried to the mainland. The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed early Tuesday, March 26 after a column was struck by a container ship that reportedly lost power, sending vehicles and people into the Patapsco River.
